Business Coach vs Consultant
Business coach vs consultant: the real difference for a founder-led company
A business coach works on the leader. A consultant works on a defined problem and hands back a recommendation. The practical difference is what you are left holding. A coach leaves you better able to solve it yourself. A consultant leaves it solved, and nothing changed about how the next one gets solved.
Business coach: works on the leader. Judgment under pressure, communication, habits, how decisions get made. The structure of the company is not usually the direct subject.
Consultant: works on a defined problem. Diagnoses it, recommends or builds a fix, and typically leaves once the deliverable lands.
Both are legitimate. They fail in different ways. A coach engaged on a structural problem produces a more self-aware founder inside the same broken system. A consultant engaged on a judgment problem produces a document nobody follows.
How to tell which one you need: if you can name the problem precisely and it is bounded, hire a consultant. If the problem is your own judgment, capacity or willingness to let go, hire a coach. If you cannot name it, neither will help yet. Hiring either at that point is an expensive way to find out which you needed.
Jerald Lee built The Growth Coach HK after 22 years in commercial leadership, sales and strategy, including nearly 13 years at Google across Asia Pacific as Country Lead for Google Ads. The work is for founder-CEOs of founder-led companies with roughly 50 to 200 employees in Hong Kong, Singapore and across Asia.
So which one do I actually need, a business coach or a consultant? If you already know what is wrong and need someone to build the fix, a consultant. If the constraint is your own judgment or capacity, a coach. If you are not certain which, name the problem first. The Growth Review is a 90-minute session that does exactly that, in writing.
Can one person be both? Yes, and the risk is that they default to whichever they prefer selling. The test is whether they will tell you the answer is a consultant when it is, and decline the coaching work.
Why does this distinction matter for a founder-led company specifically? At roughly 50 to 200 employees a problem that looks like a leadership issue is often a structural one, or the reverse. Hiring the wrong role for the actual problem costs a quarter and the fee.
Which one is The Growth Coach HK? Both, in a defined order. The Growth Review is a consulting act, a paid diagnostic that names the constraint in writing. What follows is coaching if the constraint is judgment or capacity, and a structured Systems engagement in Leadership, Team Development or Revenue if it is structural.
How much does it cost to find out which one I need, and how do I start? USD 500 for the Growth Review, refunded if the written read does not arrive within 48 hours or names no specific constraint. Before that, a free 30-minute fit call.
